Backhanded compliment of the day

April 26, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Don’t forget your passport or your shots: Nearby First Avenue is a great place to walk and discover Oak Park. It is home to many Sikh families and smells of onion cooked with an untried spice entice. This aroma, and the extremely friendly children who swarm up with all the gossip of the street, make it seem like a distant country. — writer Guphy Gustafson, in the Sacramento News & Review in Sacramento, California, profiles the city’s Oak Park neighborhood […]

CA Sikhs join others to testify in support of Workplace Religious Freedom Act

April 19, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, I attended the Labor and Employment Committee Hearing in California’s State Capitol in Sacramento, California, in which the “Workplace Religious Freedom Act of 2012” (also known as AB1964 and mentioned on this blog recently) was to be considered by that Committee. Members of the California Sikh community and those of other faiths and organizations joined to testify about their support of this legislation that would clarify existing law around accommodation of religious practices in the workplace – and specifically, […]

‘Evil clown’ escaped Sikh grandfather, but not police

February 17, 2012 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

You will recall the story about the Sikh grandfather who thwarted a robbery attempt of his family’s convenience store in Sacramento, California three weeks ago. Eighty-year-old Baldev Singh had a history of fighting crime: That wasn’t enough to scare 80-year-old Baldev Singh, a retired cop, when the robber hit the family’s convenience store last weekend. “Yes, I am a policeman in Punjabi [sic], India,” Singh said. The suspect popped off one shot, but it didn’t hit anyone. Looking down the […]

Sacramento, California TV channel News10 brings us this security footage of a serial thief – nicknamed the “KISS Bandit” on account of the mask he wears – being handily thrown out of a convenience store by an elderly Sikh man. October 17, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, volunteers from the Sikh and Elk Grove, California (a suburb of Sacramento) communities gathered at the scene of the unsolved murders of Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal, two elderly Sikh friends who were out on their routine afternoon walk in March of this year.  Both men were shot in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight and were killed.  Their murders – suspected as a hate crime –  have not been solved. August 3, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The California city of Elk Grove has been the scene of two notable and suspected hate crimes this year: the shooting deaths of Sikh seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal during their evening walk, and the beating of a gay man at a local bowling alley. In response to these tragic incidents, the Elk Grove’s City Council is launching its Diversity Awareness Campaign to promote the diversity of the city which is centered around its “Diversity Pledge“.  According to Elk Grove’s Mayor: […]

More Sikh victims of violence in California

July 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A strange phenomenon has been occuring in northern California where reports of violence against Sikhs (both hate-motivated and otherwise) are becoming more common. The attack on cabbie Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, CA, the unsolved murders of seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal in Elk Grove, CA, and the unsolved murder of Balbir Singh Dhami – also in Elk Grove – all involved attacks on turban-wearing men and all occured within the same metropolitan area in less than a year.  […]
