Starting this Friday, Sikhs in Yuba City, California will be holding festivities in celebration of the birth of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 in what is now Pakistan: Temple member Paul Purewal said preparations for the parade began four months ago but started in earnest about two weeks ago. July 27, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

More Sikh victims of violence in California

July 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A strange phenomenon has been occuring in northern California where reports of violence against Sikhs (both hate-motivated and otherwise) are becoming more common. The attack on cabbie Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, CA, the unsolved murders of seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal in Elk Grove, CA, and the unsolved murder of Balbir Singh Dhami – also in Elk Grove – all involved attacks on turban-wearing men and all occured within the same metropolitan area in less than a year.  […]

As Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi this week, Sikhs are trying to bring awareness to non-Sikhs about the Sikh identity and religion. Last Saturday, an educational seminar for teachers and school officials took place at the Gurdwara in West Sacramento, CA, to bring more awareness about Sikhism and Sikhs.  It was covered by local news on channel KCRA3.  Click here for the video. Another seminar, sponsored by the Gurdwara in Yuba City, CA, was held today at Yuba City’s City Hall: Issues faced by […]

Bring your Sikhs, we’re open for business

February 8, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

One of the greatest challenges for any Sikh family is preservation and protection of our religious rights, and our practices.  Sikhs have come a long way in this country to do both of these things, but in many ways, our people are preyed upon by missionary activities of other faiths.  In the Yuba City, California area, home of one of the largest Sikh populations in the United States, such activities are being celebrated: The Rev. Masih, 36, was born a Christian […]

Protecting and strengthening our children

November 29, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The recent study released by the Sikh Coalition about the discrimination and bullying that Sikh children have faced in Bay Area schools highlights what these children go through: One middle school boy profiled in the report is Harrjit Singh [sic], who didn’t want to say what school he attends. On Sept. 11 this year, Harjit said kids called him a terrorist. And during a P.E. class, somebody ripped off his patka and said, “I’m sorry, I just wanted to see […]

Reflections on the Yuba City Sikh Parade, continued

November 27, 2010 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I highly encourage anyone who has not had the pleasure of seeing this parade to attend next year. It is held the first Sunday in November. The day is so much about giving. I have often heard that giving feels better than receiving. The leaders and members of the Sikh temple are proof that such a statement is true. — Martha Griese, CEO of the American Red Cross of Northeastern California, writes in to her local paper about her appreciation […]
