Sikh-awareness seminars take place in California

April 12, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

As Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi this week, Sikhs are trying to bring awareness to non-Sikhs about the Sikh identity and religion. Last Saturday, an educational seminar for teachers and school officials took place at the Gurdwara in West Sacramento, CA, to bring more awareness about Sikhism and Sikhs.  It was covered by local news on channel KCRA3.  Click here for the video. Another seminar, sponsored by the Gurdwara in Yuba City, CA, was held today at Yuba City’s City Hall: Issues faced by […]

Sikhs in America begin Vaisakhi celebrations

April 11, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

This week marks the celebration of Baisakhi or Vaisakhi, which is the most auspicious of celebrations on the Sikh religious calendar: Vaisakhi (Punjabi: ਵਸਾਖੀ, vaisākhī, is, as well, known as Baisakhi), it is a very important day for Sikhs and one of the most colourful events in the Sikh calendar. It occurs during mid-April every year and traditionally concurs in Punjab with the first harvesting of the crops for the year. So, historically, it has been a very joyous occasion and […]

American Sikh Day finds community support

April 7, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It’s time to make clear that appearance, religious belief, clothing, color and nation of origin are not what identify an American. We all wear different jewelry and clothes, worship (or don’t worship) in diverse ways, follow various practices in our lives and are vital, important parts of this community. So in the spirit of the legend of King Christian, we urge our readers to stand together, on April 13, in solidarity with members of a community who are being singled […]

San Francisco Republican Party elects Sikh woman as chair

April 6, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Well, the GOP Party of San Francisco unanimously elected me, an orthodox Sikh with a funny name, to be its chairwoman. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s never been an issue here in my rise through the ranks of the party. To the contrary, I’d say that members of my party have actively reached out and encouraged me to run for leadership positions. I’m the chairman of outreach for the California Republican Party statewide. The party asked me to […]

The Sikh Coalition faces racial profiling, cont’d

April 5, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It was at this moment that I realized we were being profiled and that what made us “suspicious” in the eyes of some misinformed bigot were our turbans. I clarified to the 3 officers that we are actually from South Asia; requested their business cards; and told them that we would “be in touch.”  At long last, we made our way to the Capitol Visitor Center, where Gurwinder delivered an excellent presentation with poise and incredible grace, only moments after […]
