Shifting our approach in interfaith discussions

June 30, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“What I’ve learned is that when I say, ‘We’re the same,’ I mean, ‘You’re like me,’ not, ‘I’m like you,’” he says. “One of the things we’re trying to explore with this school is, can you bring your differences to the public realm and can everybody deal with that, instead of gently walking around them—all the time celebrating difference, but really privatizing it, shunting it off?” — Adam Seligman, a College of Arts & Sciences professor of religion at Boston […]

Is there a lack of friendliness between evangelicals and other faiths?

June 28, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It is estimated that about 25-30% of the American population are Evangelical Protestants.  With this religious group being such a significant portion of America, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life‘s release of their study on the views and opinions of Evangelical Protestants from around the world is quite interesting.  As a follower of the Sikh faith, one chart stood out for me: There was a striking difference in how Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Atheists were viewed by Evangelicals among those who had a preference. […]

The Sikh Presenters Course: Self-awareness to bring public awareness

June 24, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Transparency with our most vulnerable moments can lead us to the courage we need to take charge of not only our individual destinies but also collectively participate in our community’s destiny. — Meeta Kaur, a recent participant of the Sikh Coalition’s Sikh Presenters Course, reflects on her experience during the three-day workshop.  I attended this very same course and had the opportunity to meet Meeta and many other enthusiastic Sikhs from a variety of backgrounds who were looking to bring awareness of Sikhs […]

Missionaries at the door: When opportunity knocks

April 22, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

I really liked the following post on Twitter from the author of SikhSwim, and had to re-post it here: Gave Sikh Awareness cards from SALDEF to the Jehovah's Witnesses that came to the door today. I picked up their info too. — sikhswim (@sikhswim) April 22, 2011 Admittedly, I’m usually both annoyed by missionaries who knock on my door to sell their religion to me, and amused by their facial expression when they see a full sardar answer the door. […]

Why Diane Fisher is attending American Sikh Day

April 12, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

We cannot remain silent because an attack on one minority is an attack on all. That exhortation goes for Sikhs as well as every other group in our society. We must remember this value as a cornerstone of American principles. — Diane Fisher, of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, explains why she is attending American Sikh Day tomorrow.  Read her full opinion piece in the Mercury News.

Sikh-awareness seminars take place in California

April 12, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

As Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi this week, Sikhs are trying to bring awareness to non-Sikhs about the Sikh identity and religion. Last Saturday, an educational seminar for teachers and school officials took place at the Gurdwara in West Sacramento, CA, to bring more awareness about Sikhism and Sikhs.  It was covered by local news on channel KCRA3.  Click here for the video. Another seminar, sponsored by the Gurdwara in Yuba City, CA, was held today at Yuba City’s City Hall: Issues faced by […]

American Sikh Day finds community support

April 7, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It’s time to make clear that appearance, religious belief, clothing, color and nation of origin are not what identify an American. We all wear different jewelry and clothes, worship (or don’t worship) in diverse ways, follow various practices in our lives and are vital, important parts of this community. So in the spirit of the legend of King Christian, we urge our readers to stand together, on April 13, in solidarity with members of a community who are being singled […]

Fitting in with the Sikhs of Tracy, CA

March 25, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Jon Mendelson, of the Tracy Press, writes about his visit to the Gurdwara in Tracy, California: Earlier this month, two Sikhs walking down the side of the road in Elk Grove while wearing turbans were shot down, one fatally. Police say there’s no apparent motive, but common sense screams hate crime, that some ignoramus wanted to send a message — you don’t belong here. It’s stunning irony. Because if that unknown thug had talked instead of shot, he probably would […]
