Search for killers of Elk Grove, CA Sikhs continues

October 17, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Yesterday, volunteers from the Sikh and Elk Grove, California (a suburb of Sacramento) communities gathered at the scene of the unsolved murders of Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal, two elderly Sikh friends who were out on their routine afternoon walk in March of this year.  Both men were shot in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight and were killed.  Their murders – suspected as a hate crime –  have not been solved. Yesterday’s gathering was a “Day of Action” as volunteers – […]

October 5, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

On March 4, 2011, Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal, two elderly Sikh friends, were out on their regular afternoon walk in Elk Grove, California, when they were shot in a drive-by shooting in broad daylight on residential street. Both men tragically died and the area’s Sikh and Elk Grove community were left reeling by the attacks. The murders of these innocent men is suspected to be a hate crime. To date, no suspects have been found and the crime is unsolved. […]

Scene of suspected hate crimes, Elk Grove, CA to promote its diversity

August 3, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

The California city of Elk Grove has been the scene of two notable and suspected hate crimes this year: the shooting deaths of Sikh seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal during their evening walk, and the beating of a gay man at a local bowling alley. In response to these tragic incidents, the Elk Grove’s City Council is launching its Diversity Awareness Campaign to promote the diversity of the city which is centered around its “Diversity Pledge“.  According to Elk Grove’s Mayor: […]

“Terror” does not equal “Turban”

July 28, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

It amazes me how quickly and easily the media points to the turban when acts of terror are committed across the globe, even when the individuals who performed these acts do not themselves wear a turban.  In the case of Norway’s horrendous attack, the perpetrator was a cleancut, white male.  There was one person involved who does wear a turban: a young Sikh woman, who witnessed the shooting and was lucky to escape from the killer’s rampage.  And yet, the conversation in the media would […]

More Sikh victims of violence in California

July 15, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A strange phenomenon has been occuring in northern California where reports of violence against Sikhs (both hate-motivated and otherwise) are becoming more common. The attack on cabbie Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, CA, the unsolved murders of seniors Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal in Elk Grove, CA, and the unsolved murder of Balbir Singh Dhami – also in Elk Grove – all involved attacks on turban-wearing men and all occured within the same metropolitan area in less than a year.  […]

Police release suspect sketch in Balbir Singh Dhami murder case

June 17, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Police in Sacramento, California have released a sketch of the suspect in the murder of Balbir Singh Dhami  and new photos of the suspect’s vehicle. The victim in this crime was the third Sikh murdered in Elk Grove, California in a span of three months.  Balbir Singh Dhami reportedly had a dubious drug-related past and (unlike the murders of Surinder Singh and Gurmej Atwal in Elk Grove in March) his is not considered a hate-motivated crime. His wife, who was […]

Sacramento, California Gurdwara contributes reward in search of attacker of gay man

June 14, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

“The Sikh Community condemns this disgusting attack motivated by ignorance and hate,” Sikh Temple spokesman Darshan Singh Mundy, said in a written statement announcing the reward. “In light of the recent murders of two Sikhs in Elk Grove and the hate crime conviction in Yolo County (of two men who attacked a Sikh taxi driver), we are especially sensitive to such crimes. We hope that our reward will help bring these criminals to justice.” — The Gurdwara in West Sacramento, […]

From California to New York: a tale of two hate crimes

June 9, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

A disturbing twist of fate over the past few days saw a new hate crime against a Sikh come to light as another finally saw its resolution. It is a haunting reminder of the added hostility that Sikhs must face whenever they go out in public. Pedro Ramirez was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his November, 2010 attack on taxi driver Harbhajan Singh in West Sacramento, California: Pedro Ramirez, 42, was sentenced Friday by Yolo County Superior Court […]

UPDATE: Two more Sikhs shot in Elk Grove, California

May 20, 2011 by Rupinder Mohan Singh

Over the past day or so, more details have emerged over yesterday’s shootings of Sikhs in Elk Grove, California.  The identity of the male victim was confirmed by police as Balbir Singh Dhami, 53, who did not survive.  His wife is in critical condition in the hospital. Balbir Singh apparently had a checkered and cloudy past: The turmoil of Balbir Singh Dhami’s life in recent years could offer Sacramento police a glimpse into why he was gunned down on a […]
